breaking a lease

Hello, I gave my present landlord two months written notice to vacate my apartment (I had a one year lease which I signed Feb 1, 2012) I paid the fee to break the lease and I rented another apartment which I have moved into and from what I understood September's rent was covered as that was to be my last month which I paid in January 2012 prior to moving in. The property manager now tells me on September 10, 2012 that they are holding me responsible for the rent until the end of January 2013 and they only placed an ad a week ago to rent the unit. I have called numerous times to talk to them since my car was vadalized in the underground parking lot in August an no one has returned my calls and they are always in a "meeting" when I call, even today when I called I almost had to demand to speak to someone in person. Do they have the right to hold me responsible for the rent until the end of the lease? Do I have any options or do I have to cover the rent each month?

Thank you,

Mary
