Can the crown press an assult charge if the victim requests to drop it?

I was charged with assulting my wife during an altercation we had at our place. I did not ever strike her but restrained her. She threw a mug at me and I held her throat until she settled down. The police officer only took her statement before arresting me; I have yet to tell my story yet I'm the only one that has been charged. My wife is feeling remorse for getting me arrested and will not testify against my statement in court. My question is, can the charges get dropped if she requests and/or recents her story? If it does go to trial and she will not be there, do I need to hire a lawyer?
