Need immigration related advice

If a skilled worker applicant in a foreign country got married to a Canadian citizen who was born, raised, and lived here, after the application was made, and did not change their marital status and stated they were single in their landing interview when they got here, is it a material misrepresentation? Since the spouse was already a Canadian who needed no medical or security clearance, and they had no children, there would be no one in this family class to sponsor. The applicant would have applied for and evaluated in the skilled worker category, independently of any relationship or sponsorship to the spouse. What could the consequences be of such a situation?
