Contrator not honoring warranty - do I get work done by 3rd party and then make a claim or should I try to claim on estimates for repairs only

Had a roof redone almost two years ago. It leaked the 1st winter after. Contractor was contacted and did visually inspect problem but could not provide immediate fix - would return in the spring to repair. Since then contractor has never returned calls (over a year now). I took the matter to the Better Business Bureau but they also have had no luck getting this contractor to contact them. I assume that my only option at this point is a legal notice and possibly small claims court. The contract stated a 5 year service warranty so we are well within the contract limitations.

My main question is: Should I get the repair work done by a 3rd party immediately and then try to claim that specific amount, should I only get estimates for the work and use those values as the basis for a claim or should I try to get the original contractor to honor their warranty (seems unlikey at this point)?

Thank you
